The monastery of Monk Isle

Monk Isle is a secluded island appearing in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Monk Isle is located north of Moonshade - meaning the Isle of Beyond - and is the home of the order of the Xenkan Monks. Xenka selected this remote island due to her frustration with the ignorant mages of Moonshade. Reaching the island is only possible by ship, or for those knowing the secret of teleportation - which the monks of the order do. The monks live on this island mostly isolated from the outside world and under strict rules that order their daily life. Besides the big monastery and the various smaller buildings and agricultural fields on the island, there are two points of special interest. The Bell Tower, where the bells announce to the monks by magical means their next task of the day, and the Place of Visions, where said visions are received by the monks.

Monk Isle actually was the only greater settlement that survived the destruction brought by the Banes of Chaos over the Serpent Isle.

Lore[edit]

Monk Isle was the original home of the Prophetess Xenka. It is where she did most of her studies and, later on, where her followers came to hear her speak and to study her words. Life on Monk Isle is uncomplicated. The bells in the tower govern the day. They toll when it is time to awaken, when it is time for meditation at the monastery when it is time to till the fields and when it is time to retire. This tranquil life is one that I easily grew accustomed to in my young days.

Trivia[edit]

  • Cheating yourself to Monk Isle in order to short-circuit the plot won't work. None of the Monks will be there. Monk Isle has to be entered through a Serpent Gate the regular way to make them appear.
  • During Ultima I, the town "The Brothers" existed on this island. A strangely prophetic name considering a monk order would later occupy the island.
