A serpent gate

The serpent gates are a fast and safe way to travel through the Serpent Isle.

Description[edit]

Serpent gates are essentially huge square stone slabs on the floor with the head of a serpent being engraved on the surface. To use a serpent gate, a serpent jawbone with the fitting teeth is needed. Then the gate is used to travel to the Dark Path. The gates also are the exit points of the travel from the Dark Path. Serpent gates are available at any important point of the island, the cities of new and old, and the temples and shrines.

The gates were build by the Ophidians, but the knowledge of how to use them was lost with the time, with only a few deciphering their secrets. Erstam, who did decipher their usage, managed to get two jawbones. One that he gave away and which in the end was stolen and used by Batlin, and one which he later gave the Avatar in Ultima VII Part Two in return for a favor. The Avatar thus used the serpent gates to travel throughout the Serpent Isle with ease.
