The Pirate Cave is a cavern which appears in Ultima VI and in the Super Nintendo-port of Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Located on Spektran, the Pirate Cave was the resting place of Captain Hawkins treasure, which had been hidden there when the tyrannical pirate and his crew had found themselves shipwrecked upon the island. As the brigands had previously seized a portion of the silver tablet while robbing Zoltan's kumpania on the road, this cache would prove crucial to the Avatar's quest to resolve the Gargish conflict, as the hero needed the tablet to translate the Book of Prophecies. In addition to this pivotal artifact, the caves also contained numerous other treasures, including a storm cloak and a magic fan.

In order to locate this grotto, the Avatar would first need to assemble the treasure map which Hawkins' crew had divided amongst themselves after slaying their leader, requiring the hero to go on numerous and extensive quests to obtain all nine pieces of it.

Ultima VII (SNES) Port[edit]

While the Pirate Cave did not make an appearance in Ultima VII for the PC, they did appear in the SNES version of the game, where it was moved to Dagger Isle. In this version of the game, the cave contained a valuable piece of equipment known as the lightning rod.

Trivia[edit]

The quest for the treasure map is not needed if the player already knows where to dig.
In the C64-port of Ultima VI, one has to use the spell Explosion to blast open the door of the treasure chamber, as powder kegs do not exist in that particular port.
Captain Hawkins' grave at the start of the cave makes no sense, since he was killed under very different circumstances. The error was removed in The Ultima 6 Project.
