Great Light

Great Light is the strongest illumination spell available to a mage.
Spell Description[edit]
The Light spell is very useful, but sometimes, things have to be illuminated even more. Then Great Light comes in handy. Once spoken, a light as bright as a second sun will scare away the shadows, leaving no place for creatures of darkness to hide. This light source also lasts much longer than the ordinary Light spell, thus making the investment into the needed mandrake root for the spell worth it.
History[edit]
Already in the Age of Darkness, mages experimented with stronger light spells, as seen with the spells Dag Lorum and Sominae in Ultima III. Such experiments strangely did not continue with the start of the Age of Enlightenment. It was only in Ultima V that this spell was finally created to get a much better duration time for the illumination. By the time of Ultima IX, the Day spell had replaced this one.

Vas Lor conjures a great light. This light is equivalent to In Lor's in quality and range, but Vas Lor lasts longer. Its endurance comes from mandrake root. Mix the prepared root with sulphurous ash and proceed as if making In Lor.

Ultima Saga[edit]
This article or section is about the Ultima Saga series of novels. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.
After touching the temporal curtain created by Balthan at the end of The Forge of Virtue, Jordan is blinded by magic. The spell scrolls used to construct the time wall are An Tym, Xen Corp and Vas Lor.[1]
They attempted to fight Jordan's magical blindness using In Lor. Balthan was preparing to add mandrake root to his spell to increase its potency, which (assuming he used the Vas incantation) would have created a Great Light spell. This would have been the second Third Circle spell that Balthan had cast, even though he was only prepared for Second Circle magic.[2]
- Light spells in Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two differ from all other light sources in the games by using the palette 6, which results in much nicer colors without a red tint. This mechanic for some reason was broken in Exult right from the start, where the spells instead used the palettes 11 and 12 like all other light sources. This was finally fixed in 2020.
