Ignite is a simple spell used to ignite different kinds of flame-producing devices.
Spell Description[edit]
While this spell can be misused to cause horrible fires – indeed there are reports that some fires in cities of Britannia originated that way – its main purpose is to ignite things like candles, torches or braziers, in case that the caster has no means at hand to ignite it by natural means. However, this only applies to one single flame source. Douse is its opposite spell. Its originally meager requirements were fully negated when research by mages made it a linear spell, no longer having a mana and reagent cost.
In Ultima IX, this spell is needed for the Ritual of Binding, which is used to bind spells permanently to a spellbook, as the candles on the pentagram can only be ignited with it.
If every flammable device in sight is to be ignited, the Great Ignite spell is needed.

An ancient spell drawn from a pool of magic long since faded. Ignite is still a useful means of lighting suitable items. Many a winter night at the cottage has been cheered by the Ignite spell. Once, overly so. In his first attempt at this spell, Arduin destroyed the corn crib which to rebuild took a fortnight from his studies.

Ultima Saga[edit]
This article or section is about the Ultima Saga series of novels. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.
In Lynn Abbey's Ultima Saga, the linear spell of Hearthfire creates sparks which can easily ignite most flammable materials. The mage need only coat his fingertips in greenwood ash and expends a small amount of mana. Linear spells do not use Words of Power or traditional reagents, but do require mana.[1]
