The Awaken spell counters sleep.
Spell Description[edit]
First entering the mage’s repertoire in Ultima IV, Awaken is a spell that bestows the effect of rousing its unconscious target from slumber, whether it being a consequence of natural fatigue or induced by magical means such as the Sleep enchantment, as well as its field-based and alchemical counterparts. The negation affects only a single beneficiary; its greater variant, Mass Awaken, is capable of bestirring an entire group. When facing foes capable of casting sleep spells, this spell is a necessity.
Already with few requirements, the Britannian spell eventually developed into a linear spell, no longer consuming mana or reagents. On the Serpent Isle, however, the spell consumes more mana than the non-linear Britannian spell.
Orange potions fulfill the same purpose as Awaken.

It is a simple spell which may be cast by the beginning student of the mystic arts with little effort or cost. It requires the use of Ginseng for its healing qualities and Garlic in order to ward off the coming of sleep until the victim’s body has returned to its normal cycle of wakefulness and rest. Trivia[edit]
- In Ultima VI, Dispel Magic counts an able substitute for Awaken among its more versatile effects.
- In Lynn Abbey's Ultima Saga, Balthan stayed awake for twenty days before locking himself behind his magic barrier using An Zu, and has stashed away enough garlic and ginseng to keep himself awake for months.[1]
- Being a linear spell in Ultima VII, it makes orange potions worthless.
