Sleep (concept)
This article is about a game mechanic. For other uses, see Sleep (disambiguation).
Sleeping is an activity that the Stranger, NPCs and monsters can experience, either by magical means or under controlled situations.
Description[edit]
Magical[edit]
The Sleep spell can be used to put a magician’s enemies to sleep, rendering them temporarily harmless, as well as vulnerable.
Natural[edit]
From time to time, a party of adventurers can elect to slumber so as to restore health and mana. Although the ideal place to do this is at an inn, travelers can also hole up and camp in the wilderness. This can be dangerous however, as the sleepers may be set upon by enemies or hungry creatures, and will often be slow to awaken to defend themselves without first setting a watch.
A potion can be used to induce sleep.
Ultima Underworld[edit]
Sleeping was an important part of Ultima Underworld. Not only was it functional to reduce fatigue (which affected regeneration rate of vitality (and possibly mana, unconfirmed)) and recover vitality and mana, but it was the main way to receive messages from Garamon.
The avatar was able to sleep without a bedroll, but having one to use would increase the restfulness of the slumber, and thus the amount of vitality and mana recovered during rest would be greater. There were a number of straw beds to be found in The Abyssal Colony but the Avatar could not use them in a way that would improve his sleep as the bedrolls did.
To sleep with a bedroll, it must be in your inventory. You can then either left-click on it in default mode or right-click on it with the USE icon highlighted.
To use a bedroll in must be in your inventory. You cannot use a bedroll while it is out in the 3d world.
To sleep without using a bedroll, press F10.
There are a number of straw beds throughout the game, but these are purely decorative and not usable for anything.
Remember that you can't sleep just anytime, anywhere. Specifically you can't sleep when hostile monsters are near. You can't sleep with swimming, flying, levitating, or walkig on lava. But, come to think of it, why would you want to?
The Avater, being a clever one, never forgets to put out the light sources before going to sleep. Otherwise they'd be spent when it came time to wake up and journey on.
Bragit's bedroll. Take it with you, he won't mind.
Goblins' straw beds, not usable for sleeping. Only the bedrolls are.
Ultima Underworld II[edit]
Everything said about sleeping in Ultima Underworld also applies to Ultima Underworld II. In addition to the straw beds found in Ultima Underworld there are more traditional beds in Ultima Underworld II that the Avatar can use to get restful sleep similar to using a bedroll.
The beds come in several combinations of colors but they're all functionally the same. Use them like you would any other object in the 3d world: right-click and drag on them in default mode or right-click on them while in USE mode.
