Saber

A saber in Ultima VIII

A saber (also "sabre") is a backsword with a curved blade and a large guard covering most of the hand. The larger curved blade was suitable for slashing, and on Earth, was frequently used in military action up until the beginning of the 20th century. It appears in Martian Dreams and Ultima VIII.

History

The sabre was first seen on Mars, where it stood out as a quaint but serviceable Terran melee weapon on a planet full of alien curiousities. Although some of the weapons came to the Red Planet with the Avatar on the rescue expedition, they were also available for purchase from collector William Randolph Hearst. The Avatar encountered them again on Pagan, where they could be purchased from Korick the blacksmith, but were found elsewhere throughout Pagan as well.

Effectiveness of the Weapon

In Ultima VIII, the damage of this weapon is 5(min) - 17(max).

Trivia

• In a brief but disturbing Dream-World sequence in Martian Dreams, the Avatar awakens to find the sabre dripping blood from its tip, leaving the player wondering if they are responsible for killing the party.
