Shovel
The shovel is a common tool, normally used for digging, which can be bought at every well-stocked provisioner shop. It appears in Ultima VI, Martian Dreams, Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two. While shovels are often regarded as tools for gardening, farming or digging graves, they can also be used to unearth a great many novel items. They can also be weaponized.
Description[edit]
As already stated, the main use for this tool is digging holes into the dirt, which actually can happen more often than one might expect. Although not balanced for fighting, it can be fairly effective when used as a makeshift weapon – something the provisioner Greg in Britain even boasted about in a – most likely – false story. Typically found near farms, its construction requires the use of two hands.
Effectiveness as a Weapon[edit]
- In Ultima VI, shovels have a damage of 4 and a reach of 0.
- In Martian Dreams, shovels have a damage of 1 and a reach of 0.
- In Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two, shovels have a damage of 6 and a reach of 4.[1]
Trivia[edit]
- The shovel is also useful in dungeons in Ultima VI for digging up gold nuggets.
- In Ultima VI a shovel is needed on Spektran in order to reach the silver tablet.
- Shovels and similar tools usable as weapons could also be found on Mars in the 19th century – see Weapons in Martian Dreams. Indeed, a shovel is needed regularly there due to the many plant-based puzzles being encountered.
