Slings are simple ranged weapons, consisting of a cradle for a projectile situated betwixt two pieces of cord. They appear in Ultima III, Ultima IV, Ultima V, Ultima VI, Ultima VII, and Ultima VII Part Two, as well as in the Ultima Underworld, Ultima Underworld II and Martian Dreams.
Description[edit]
Slings first came into use during the time of Exodus, where they afforded a means of engaging combatants from a distance for those unable to afford or properly wield a bow or crossbow. As they required but simple stones as ammunition, many Ultima games featuring slings did not require the player to collect projectiles in order to operate such weapons.
Efficacy[edit]
- In Ultima IV slings have a damage rating of "32" and all professions can use them.
- In Ultima V slings have a damage rating of "4" and a range of "6".
- In Ultima VI slings have a damage rating of "6" and a range of "4".
- In Ultima VII, slings are listed as having an effectiveness rating of "2". In Ultima VII Part Two, they have a damage of "3" and a reach of "8".[1]

Magic Slings[edit]
On Serpent Isle, a number of "magic" slings could be found scattered throughout the realm – although it is not known how their enchantments cause them to differ from mundane slings.

The common sling is fashioned from twenty-four inches of cloth, folded in half, with a leather cup. The projectiles — small rocks — are easily collected, making this an inexpensive missile weapon. A perennial favorite with travellers down on their luck.

Inexpensive and easy to port is the sling, and ammunition is plentiful in open country.

Some clever travellers have even been known to carry slings so they can drive off aggressors with hurled stones.

The disadvantage of bows, crossbows and slings is that loading them requires the use of both hands.
