Morning star

The morning star is the further refinement of the common mace, in which a fluted or spiked metal ball is attached to the pole with a long iron chain, enabling the its wielder to swing it with great force. Such weapons appear in Ultima V, Ultima VI, Ultima VII, and Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Similar to the Terran military flail, morning stars allowed those who used to to achieve a superior reach to their attack while still dealing damage comparable to that of a standard mace. Used throughout the ages of Enlightenment and Armageddon, these weapons left devastating injuries when they struck true.

Effectiveness of the Weapon[edit]

In Ultima V, the morning star does 15 points of damage and has a reach of 2.
In Ultima VI, the morning star does 15 points of damage and has a reach of 2.
In Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two, morning stars had a damage of 5 and a reach of 2.[1]

Lore[edit]

A "mace on a chain" is the morning star, which reaches over obstacles to smite thy foe at range. One blow straight on from this and the enemy is out till morning— at least.

A polearm is generally a stout wooden or metal staff topped by a metal cutting or bludgeoning fixture. The morningstar, a variation on this theme, consists of a staff with a chain attached to one end, and attached to the chain, a heavy, spiked bludgeon. Morningstars, halberds, and other polearms are prized for the damage they are capable of doing and for their long reach.

Blunt weapons such as maces, clubs and hammers enable the combatant to concentrate raw strength in the delivery of crushing blows to one's opponent. The punishment of such mighty impacts has often been the key to achieving victory.

In contrast, blunt weapons such as maces and clubs deliver their punch, limited though it may be, based on the brute strength of the wielder, nearly ignoring the protection of the target.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Ultima V, the additional range of morning stars allowed them to strike enemies through walls.
