Pick

The pick is a hand tool consisting of a metal head attached to a short pole. These items may be found in Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two, as well as in Martian Dreams.

Description

Frequently used in mining operations and other pursuits which involve digging, a standard pick head has one pointed end which is of use in breaking up rock, and one flattened end which may be used as a prying tool or a crude axe to chop through tree roots. While not designed for combat, the pick may nevertheless be used as a makeshift weapon when better arms are not available. Picks are also the only way to harvest the Stone of Castambre, which is located on the Isle of Fire.

Effectiveness as a Weapon

In Martian Dreams, picks have a damage of 2 and a reach of 0.

Picks were listed in Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two as having a damage of 4 and an effective range of 2.

The Gold and Silver Picks

In the NES-port of Ultima III, special gold and silver picks are needed to obtain the Mystic Arms and Armour – as these artifacts may not be retrieved from the earth by means of other tools.
