Mystic Armour
The Mystic Armour is a magical variety of armour which is able to protect its wearer in places of great evil, such as the the Stygian Abyss or the depths of the great dungeon Doom. Such equipment appears in Ultima IV and Ultima V, as well as in the Nintendo-port of Ultima III.
Description[edit]
The Mystic Armour was wrought by the Minoxian blacksmith Zircon, who entrusted its safekeeping to Sir Simon. Knowing that only a partial Avatar could wear such gear, the nobleman hid the armour in the sacred Oak Grove of Empath Abbey, and would only reveal its location to the questing Stranger when the hero stood on the precipice of enlightenment in all of the eight virtues.
The hero would go on to retrieve this magical equipment and would don it as before venturing forth into the Abyss, resisting the perils that blocked access to the Shrine of the Codex.
Years after the end of the quest, the Stranger (now the Avatar) would be able to recover the armour from the Underworld during the events of Ultima V – and could find the enchanted gear within the lake of lava near the dungeon Hythloth. Once more, the armour would prove its worth, protecting the hero and companions against the monsters they would face in dungeon Doom.
The Ultima 6 Project[edit]
This is an Ultima 6 Project-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.
In The Ultima 6 Project, the Mystic Armour could be found in the basement of the Lycaeum. However, this time only one piece was available.
Trivia[edit]
- In the Nintendo-port of Ultima III, the Stranger must obtain Mystic Armour, rather than the Exotic Armour from the PC version of the game. This may be accomplished by retrieving the Golden Pick from the city of Dawn, that hero might use it to retrieve the armour from its resting place on an island near Grey.
- In Ultima IV, retrieving the Mystic Armour grants (only) the player's character 400 XP.
- In Ultima IV Scatu of the Lycaeum can be found wearing a full suit of Mystic Armour, implying that he has attained partial Avatarhood.
- In the Nintendo-port Ultima IV, the Stranger must obtain Exotic Armour (or "☥ Armour") rather than Mystic Armour. This equipment may be found in a special chamber under Empath Abbey, where it awaits an eight-parts Avatar to claim it.[1]
