The Flame Sting is a magical saber in Pagan that can generate fire. It appears in Ultima VIII.
Description[edit]
Normally, the sorcerers of Pagan shun physical weapons, instead trusting their Sorcery to the power of Pyros. However, when the element of Fire is introduced to the weapon's powers, many sorcerers become interested at once. The result of this is the Flame Sting, a truly horrible weapon that engulfs its foes in devastating flames with each strike, doing massive damage. The burnt victim is then forced to serve Pyros for all eternity.
The Avatar discovered the Flame Sting while being tested in the Obsidian Fortress. Though it was guarded by deadly traps, the Avatar still managed to obtain the weapon; one of the most powerful in Pagan. It is unknown what happened to the Flame Sting after the Avatar left Pagan.
Effectiveness of the Weapon[edit]
- The damage of this weapon is 5(min) - 16(max). It increases Dexterity by 1 point, and adds 5(min) - 10(max) fire damage each strike.[1]
- As good as the weapon is, it has two drawbacks: it is totally useless against daemons, and it cannot harm a sorcerer using a flame shield (thus, killing Malchir with it is not an option).
- The greater benefit of this weapon is that it can permanently kill skeletons, who otherwise raise themselves shortly after being destroyed unless using Grant Peace Necromancy spell.
- There's another copy of this weapon at the Plane of Fire, located behind a little shrine to the northeast (the one with a box full of white spheres). It's on a floor level lower than the shrine itself and using Endure Heat spell is recommended.
