Unlike the larger two-handed hammers better designed for use in war, simple one-handed hammers are often mere craftsman's tools which are at times used as improvised weapons in combat. Such articles are useable in combat in Ultima VII, Ultima VII Part Two, and Ultima VIII, as well as in Ultima Underworld, Ultima Underworld II, Savage Empire and Martian Dreams.
Description[edit]
A standard tinker's hammer will serve its wielder in a melee but a little better than a simple club, and is naturally inferior to bludgeoning arms created to see combat, such as maces or flails. Nevertheless, it can function as a weapon for those with limited options.
Effectiveness of the Weapon[edit]
- In Savage Empire, the (metal) hammer inflicts "average" damage.
- In Martian Dreams, hammers inflict "low" damage.
- In Ultima VII, single-handed hammers have an effectiveness rating of "4".
- In Ultima VII Part Two, the hammer does 4 points of damage and has a range of "2".[1]
- In Ultima VIII, hammers deal between 4-12 points of damage per strike.[2]
Variants[edit]
Rock Hammers[edit]
- Main article: Rock hammer
A rock hammer is a small hand tool used for breaking down large boulders into smaller stones. such items can be found amongst the diverse tribes of the temporally displaced Eodon valley in Savage Empire (where they could be used as makeshift weapons) as well as appearing in various subterranean mining locations in Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld II.
Ballpeen Hammers[edit]
- Main article: Weapons in Martian Dreams
During the Avatar's adventures on Mars, the hero would have access to ballpeen hammers brought to the red planet by the Victorian explorers who were stranded there. Such tools, although designed for metalworking, could be weaponized for use against the various beasts of the cold world, although they were not terribly effective in combat.

Blunt weapons such as maces, clubs and hammers enable the combatant to concentrate raw strength in the delivery of crushing blows to one's opponent. The punishment of such mighty impacts has often been the key to achieving victory.

Among the natives the Nahuatla obsidian-edged sword is considered the 'chief' of weapons, with the widely-used atl-atl, or spear-thrower, as the well-respected 'shaman'. Beyond that, in descending order of worth, we have the large, two-handed club favored by the strongest natives; the hand-thrown spear; the stone axe used by most native warriors; the primitive short-bow used by nearly every tribe for both warfare and hunting; the solid wood club; the rock hammer, a single-handed club; the scalpel – sharp Nahuatla obsidian knife, more practical as a tool than a weapon; and, finally the relatively rare boomerang.
