A poison dagger as seen in
Ultima VII Part Two A poison dagger (or venom dagger) is a small, bladed weapon designed to cause death to its victim via injection of a slow-acting venom. Such daggers appear in Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Poison daggers are comprised of a venomous sea serpent tooth enchanted and attached to a standard dagger hilt, and are readily identifiable by their blades' characteristic emerald-like glimmer. While comparable in immediate damage potential to their ordinary counterparts, these specialized weapons inflict a toxin upon their target that, left untreated, can prove lethal. Poison daggers lack the durability of traditional steel-bladed varieties, however, and are prone to breakage after limited use.[1]
Effectiveness of the Weapon[edit]
- In Ultima VII, a poison dagger causes a damage of "1" and poisons the target.
- In Ultima VII Part Two, a poison dagger causes a damage of "1" and poisons the target.
History[edit]
Coming to the fore throughout Britannia and Serpent Isle in the early Age of Armageddon, poison daggers were often favored by buccaneers and would-be assassins of the period. In the realm of Lord British's rule, a poison dagger was used in the murder of a Baron Johann IV prior to the events of Ultima VII,[1] while on distant Serpent Isle, one of these toxic blades was wielded by Monitorian tattooist Lydia in an attempt on the Avatar's life, following a revelation of the artist's poisoning the hero with a tainted Mark of Knighthood in Ultima VII Part Two.
The widespread use of poison daggers was relatively short-lived in Britannia, however, with such weapons nary to be found by the time of the Avatar's final return to the land in Ultima IX.
Other Poisoned Weapons[edit]
During the Avatar's effort to shatter the Guardian's colossal blackrock dome in Ultima Underworld II, the hero could employ the Poison Weapon spell in order to temporarily envenom any weapon, bestowing it with similar functionality to a poison dagger for a short period of time. Furthermore, in the course of the otherworldly journeys taking place throughout this quest, an artifact known as the Sword of Poison Weapon could be uncovered among the frigid ruins of Anodunos, and was perpetually imbued with the effects of the spell from which its name was taken.

The assassins tool. This shimmering green dagger is actually the enchanted tooth of a poisonous sea serpent, joined to the hilt of a regular dagger. Its envenomed blade injects the slow poison into its victim, but it frequently breaks. It is the perfect assassination weapon (see Alagners History, Assassination of Baron Johann IV (page 54)).
