Bay of Pirates
The Bay of Pirates is a feature of the Isle of the Avatar which appears in Ultima IV as one of the perils which must be surpassed before entering the Abyss.
Description[edit]
The entrance to the volcanic mouth of the Abyss was only accessible via ship, and pilgrims attempting to journey there would be forced to pass through the Bay of Pirates before they could make landfall. Here, a fleet of spectral pirates would challenge those who sought passage, their ghost ships bombarding any who attempted to make landfall on the bay's eastern shores. The Stranger would find this a difficult obstacle to pass without the hull-strengthening powers of the magical wheel of HMS Cape.[1]
While the bay remained largely pirate free during the remainder of the Age of Enlightenment, during the time of Ultima VII, a small band of non-spectral swashbucklers had taken up residency in the bay, zealously guarding their ill-gotten booty.
Lore[edit]
| “ | The mouth of the Bay of Pirates loomed before us. We had reached our destination. We sailed slowly into the bay. Twilight cast long shadows across the water and colored the boats in shades of grey. As we approached, phantom pirate ships materialized across the bay. Tattered sails hung from rotting beams. Ghostly crews floated across the decks—spirit crews, forced to sail forever. – from Ultima: The Avatar Adventures (Ultima IV)
