Buccaneer's Cave, also known as the Pirate's Lair, refers to a number of subterranean tunnels located in Buccaneer's Den that have, at times, been connected to the Britannian mainland and the sewers beneath Castle Britannia.
History[edit]
Age of Enlightenment[edit]
The network of tunnels beneath the city of pirates appears to have had its origins in the efforts of the Britannian Guild of Thieves, who managed to connect the caverns beneath their island city with the ancient passages that lay below Lord British's castle. By the time of Ultima VI the adjoined tunnels seemed to allow for an covert, albeit perilous, journey between the two cities and rogues such as Phoenix were able to make an easy living pilfering from Britons by means of the sewer system.[1]
Age of Armageddon[edit]
Later, as the Guild fell into decline, much of Buccaneer's Cave and its secret road to Britain appear to have fallen into disuse for a time. Some time before Ultima VII, however, several of the caves on the island would fall into the hands of the Fellowship and were refitted to serve as a secret prison and torture chamber for the organization, with secret passages opening into the House of Games and the Baths. Later on, the apparently still extant connection between these tunnels and the mainland would be exploited by a thief named Fissif, who would find himself unwittingly trapped by the Guardian's blackrock dome during Ultima Underworld II after journeying to the sewers of Castle Britannia that he might rob the guests of the Feast of the Reconstruction.[2]
Ultima VII (SNES)[edit]
Buccaneer's Cave also appeared in the SNES-port of Ultima VII, where it existed as a stand alone dungeon unrelated to Fellowship activities. By braving this monster-infested cavern, the Avatar could obtain a Power Bolt Wand.
Lore[edit]
“ | I had to go through this cave once, but I don't know if I could manage it again. Some gremlins stole all my food before I'd gotten far, and that's not the worst of it. While I was wandering around, looking for a tunnel that leads to the sewers, I ran into just about every sort of monster imaginable. Gazers, mongbats, drakes... I think I even saw a daemon, but I can't be sure. I was too busy running away at the time to get a good look. If you love fighting, this place might be your idea of heaven, but it's not for me. |

“ | A short side note regarding the mountainous tunnels on the island. Known locally as the Pirate's Lair, I by chance discovered that The Fellowship keeps torture devices within some of its chambers. This further inconsistency between their declared motives and actual practices makes me all the more skeptical. Investigate thoroughly, but cautiously. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)
