Drake, from Ultima VII manual | |
First appearance: | Ultima VI |
Last appearance: | Ultima VII Part Two |
This article is about a type of monster. For the Ultima IX character, see Sir Drake.
Drakes are immature dragons or frost dragons who have not yet developed all of the powers they will hold as adults. Found on Britannia and Serpent Isle, they appear in Ultima VI, Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Drakes are almost always found in the company of dragons, although some adolescents have been found in isolation. Given the centuries that it takes for a dragon to reach maturity, the drake phase can last several times that of a human lifespan, and even before adulthood, a young dragon can prove a formidable opponent to those who would interfere with its survival.
Lore[edit]
“ | Smaller than their cousins, the dragons, but no less ferocious in battle, drakes are usually found in the company of their more formidable relatives. In a battle against a dragon, one must be ever mindful of the deadly drakes. – from Compendium (Ultima VI)

“ | This creature is a dragon that has not yet fully grown to adulthood, a process that takes several hundred years. Like its mature relatives, this creature can also breathe fire and fly. It is commonly found in the lair of a dragon. – from The Book of Fellowship (Ultima VII)

Notable Examples[edit]
- Rudyom of Cove has a pet drake in Ultima VI, which may spit small flames as the Avatar passes.
- Although not mentioned in the documentation, the frost dragons of the ice dragons’ lair do have young drakes in their lair.
Trivia[edit]
- A funny mishap happened when translating Ultima VII to German: drakes were translated as "Erpel", which is a male duck (Engl. "mallard"). The confusion clearly came from the fact that "drake" can either refer to a type of dragon or a male duck.
