Ultima VI Nitpickers Delight Patch is a fan-made patch created by Sir John (Serendipitous Dragon of the Ultima Dragons) that meticulously addresses a number of technical errors and purported inconsistencies in the character dialogue and books of Ultima VI. The patch is available at Sir John's website, Die Heimstatt des Sir John. The most recent version is 1.23.
Installation[edit]
The patch requires an original installation of Ultima VI. Installation requires only that the patch files be copied into the game directory; the patched game can then be played as normal in DOSBox.
Features[edit]
Content Alterations[edit]
The patch implements the following alterations:
- Julia and Mariah speak to the Avatar with greater familiarity.
- Gideon refers to Marney’s mother as Gwen rather than Elisabeth, reflecting Quenton’s dialogue in Ultima VII.
- Terri no longer credits the Avatar with recovering the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom from the Great Stygian Abyss.
- In Mariah's reading of the Book of Prophecies, the line foretelling of the Underworld’s collapse is changed to refer directly to the destruction of the Realm of the Gargoyles.
- Lazeena’s dialogue no longer misspells Artegal’s name.
- The history book The First Age of Darkness refers to "Sosaria" rather than "Britannia".
- Lord British makes mention of the captured moonstones, and remarks on a difference in color between his Orb of the Moons (red) and the Avatar's (black).
- Daver offers additional dialogue concerning the runes and their physical appearance.
- Koranada explains that Gherick has devised a more timely method of producing magic shields compared to the hundred-year process described in Ultima V.
- Tara’s dialogue no longer erroneously refers to Sasha.
- Caradon no longer mistakes the Shrine of Justice for the Shrine of Honesty, and alludes to the archaic spell Anju Sermani when discussing his incinerated captain.
- Stelnar no longer mistakes the Shrine of Sacrifice for the Shrine of Honesty.
- An explanation is provided for the inconsistent spelling of Captain Johne’s name.
- Charlotte offers additional dialogue revealing the magic carpet is currently in her care.
- Ahrmaand reports that the Temple of Virtue was destroyed by the gargoyles who occupy the nearby Shrine of Compassion.
- In conversation with Ephemerides, his house is repurposed as an Observatory recently granted construction by Lord British.
- The one-armed Zeke no longer "folds his arms".
- The mystery of Quenton's murder is now soluble.
Bug Fixes[edit]
Additionally, the following bugs were fixed:
- Some correct copy protection answers provided to Mariah did not work. This has been rectified.
- Some keywords in Zellivan's conversation were duplicated, so the correct answers did not show up. This has been rectified.
- Similarly, duplicate keywords in Boskin's dialogue have been removed.
- Andrea in Yew now responds when asked about "Lenora", "Lady" and "Mayor". Originally, she would refer the Avatar to individuals in the tavern and would only respond to 'Chancellor'.
- The final "CONGRATULATIONS! Report thy Feat!" screen is up to date.
- Jaana, a prolific magician in Ultima V and Ultima VII, is now able to cast magic in Ultima VI as well.
