Dialogue Patch for Ultima IX

The Dialogue Patch for Ultima IX is a fan-made update by Grandor Dragon and Maigo Dragon, of the Ultima Dragons, that aims to improve the game's writing, following the creators' dissatisfaction with the official release.

It is often available bundled with Novum Dragon's economy patch.

Features[edit]

By directly editing the plain text format of Ultima IX's relevant data files, Grandor and Maigo were able to implement changes to conversations and written materials sufficient to alter the larger plot significantly, as well as correct various conflicts with the continuity of earlier installments and create stronger ties to them via references and returning characters. So as to avoid the introduction of glitches, the patch's creators were limited to working within the existing volume of writing.

Once the patch is installed, voices no longer match the onscreen text, thus are typically recommended to be muted.

Dialogue and plot changes[edit]

Spoiler Warning

While the encyclopedic nature of the codex means that many articles will have information that could spoil some minor aspects of the game for newer players, this article is known to contain information that provides major spoilers to elements of game plots, quests, and/or puzzles.

  • Hawkwind is completely removed. It is Shamino who contacts the Avatar on Earth. Instead of a giving a tutorial, Shamino's tone is dramatic, he makes explicit references to the ending of Ultima VIII and he explains that Sentri and Sherry have died. He also explains how he, Iolo, and Gwenno came back from the Serpent Isle, and how Iolo lost his hair in the process.
  • There has been a war between Lord British and Blackthorn while the Avatar was away on Pagan. Blackthorn returned to Britannia with an army of Wyrmguards from other worlds, Pagan included, and the subsequent war left the land devastated. Among other things, this explains why Castle Britannia is so poor in starting equipment for the Avatar.
  • The plot about the moons falling on the world is removed (except for Mariah's dialogue, because when the Dialogue Patch was released, she did not appear yet due to a bug).
  • Ambrosia (U9) was renamed Baltergres ("Refuge from Doom" in Gargish language). The gargoyles Valkadesh, Voresh, and Deresh were renamed Anagratas ("Peace Quality"), Parbentas ("Equal Virtue"), and Arglem ("Silver One"), respectively. Queen Zhah became Vasamolem ("One of Great Love"), the genderless protector of eggs. Instead of her, the new leader of the gargoyles is Wislem (U9), and he is now the same Wislem from Ultima VII.
  • Many characters from Ultima VII were reintroduced:
