Gwen (also called Elisabeth ) was the wife of Quenton Delancy, a fisherman in Skara Brae. She died some years prior to Ultima VI.
Description[edit]
Gwen was described as having been extremely beautiful, with fair hair and deep green eyes. The daughter she had with Quenton, Marney, was said to resemble her greatly.[1]
One day, when Marney was a young girl, Gwen was taken prisoner by a group of pirates who had stopped by the Skara Braen shore. They claimed that they intended to use her as a hostage, to escape pursuit by the authorities. As the young woman was led to their ship, she gave her daughter a locket, with a parting poem for her husband enclosed in it. These sad verses eventually inspired Quenton in his stewardship of the Runes of Spirituality, and formed a clue as to where the Rune lay hidden.[1][2][3]
After her abduction, the pirates soon discovered that Gwen was not a noblewoman, as her beauty had led them to suspect. After raping her, they attempted to sell her into prostitution, although she died shortly after her abduction. Her body eventually washed up on the southern shores of Skara Brae.[1][2]
Trivia[edit]
- The name of this character is inconsistent throughout the series. In Ultima VI, Gideon refers to her as "Elisabeth," whereas in Ultima VII, both Quenton and Mordra give her name as "Gwen."[1][2][4]
