Flaming oil is a simple incendiary weapon used on Britannia, which functions somewhat similarly to a contemporary Terran Molotov cocktail. Flasks of this substance appear in Ultima IV, Ultima V, Ultima VI, and Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Flasks of flaming oil create a sudden conflagration upon impact, resulting in a fiery field which may block the advance of an enemy. Volatile and unreliable in its effects, this substance was generally used as a weapon of last resort by those desperate to escape a battle with their lives and it fell out of use toward the late Age of Armageddon. While oil flasks did appear in Ultima IX, they could not be lit and thrown. However, archers with sufficient training can coat their arrow tips with the oil and lit them for create flaming arrows for added damage.

Lore[edit]

The use of flasks of Flame Oil constitutes an innovation in Britannia. Any of the Eight Great Professions can use it. The wielder casts the ignited oil in a chosen direction, creating a corridor of flaming oil which lasts several minutes. Any enemy entering the field of flaming oil suffers burn damage for each turn passed in the inferno. A favorite weapon among those badly hurt and in need of rescue — a last ditch defense.
Popular throwing weapons include daggers, spears, axes, and flasks of flaming oil.

Lightweight, hand-held items such as daggers, spears, axes or flasks of flaming oil can be most effective in times of need.

Flasks of oil may get used up pretty quickly, but the flames can keep burning a slow enemy for quite a while. If you're clever, you can use them to set up a wall of fire between you and your foes.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Ultima IV, enemies killed with flaming oil did not grant experience points.
