Scythe

Not normally considered a tool of war, the scythe is a common farm implement. It appears in Martian Dreams, Ultima VII, Ultima VII Part Two and Ultima IX.

Description[edit]

A scythe is most often used for harvesting crops such as wheat. Thus they are often found on farms, like in Paws. However, when pressed into service as a weapon, it can be extremely effective, although its use requires two hands and is difficult to wield, resulting in a high injury risk for the unskilled. By the time of Ultima IX, scythes were once again employed as powerful weapons.

Effectiveness as a Weapon[edit]

In Martian Dreams, scythes have a damage of 3 and a reach of 0.
In Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two, scythes have a damage of 7 and a reach of 4.[1]
The damage of this weapon in Ultima IX is 65(min) - 95(max).[2]

Lore[edit]

Though a bit cumbersome for warriors who lack dexterity, in the hands of the nimble, the scythe delivers terrible wounds. In times of peace, the scythe can be found on the farm. In combat, the handle is shortened, and the blade is straightened to a degree. Few are willing to wield the scythe, yet they that do must not be overlooked.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Ferryman of Ultima VII employs the Death Scythe, which has abilities far beyond the typical scythe described here.
  • Scythes and similar tools useable as weapons could also be found on Mars in the 19th century -- see Weapons in Martian Dreams.
