Blowgun

A blowgun is a simple projectile weapon fire darts via the momentum created by the user's breath. They appear in Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two, as well as in Savage Empire and the Nintendo-port of Ultima III.

Description[edit]

On Greater Earth, cultures which employ blowguns seldom use them as weapons of war, as they are much better suited to attacking small game such as rabbits or monkeys. When blowguns are used against human targets, the projectiles are often envenomed – as the force of the darts alone are unlikely to cause significant harm. Within the world's hidden valley of Eodon, many of the tribesmen of the region employ blowguns in combat, with the technologically primitive Urali people appearing to have a predilection for the weapon.

Among the goblin tribes of Serpent Isle, blowguns were a popular weapon among females and were used with a relatively effective poison to assault enemies from a distance. In Britannia, the blowgun became briefly popular with bandits and pirates during the early Age of Armageddon but never came into common enough use to be available through commercial weapon's dealers.

Effectiveness of the Weapon[edit]

Blowguns were listed in Ultima VII as having an effectiveness rating of "1".
Blowguns were listed in Ultima VII Part Two as having a damage of "3" and an effective range of "6".[1]

Lore[edit]

SE-blowgun.gif
The blowgun, a weapon in use by all the tribes but especially common among the feared Urali thugs, is the 'outcast,' having no place in this hierarchy. The darts alone are far too weak to be a weapon, but when coated with poison they become an instrument of death far too powerful for use under all but the most dire of circumstances.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Nintendo-port of Ultima III, blowguns replaced bows as the most commonly available ranged weapon, and they could be bought for the same cost as a standard bow in the PC version of the game.
