The Slayer

The Slayer is an enchanted weapon on Pagan. It appears in Ultima VIII.

Description[edit]

On Pagan, the story of the Slayer was told to scare children. Said to be a weapon with a mind of its own, it would long for its wielder to spill blood so that it could be fed! However, the Slayer's tale is, in truth, very real. Stored in the old ruins under the East Road near the Cemetery, the weapon waits the opportunity to finally feed again, to again taste the blood of its smitten foes.

The Avatar acquired the weapon when the hero broke through the ground of an old ruin on the East Road. Following the advice of old books through the ruins under the ground, the Avatar eventually discovered this bloodthirsty mace.

It is unknown what happened to the Slayer after the Avatar left Pagan.

Effectiveness of the Weapon[edit]

The damage of this weapon is 4–14.[1]

Lore[edit]

Well have ye done to reach this far. Behind me lies the entrance way of the Slayer’s chamber. But for the last time, be ye warned: Many are those who have tred this ground before ye. Many have come seeking the Slayer, and jealous are they of others who seek what they prize. Go ye now into the chamber, for the Slayer beckons. The Slayer, whose fine oaken body be so strong as to withstand the Titanic forces that would try to tame it. Ye have come seeking this treasure. Ye have now gotten what ye have sought. Be careful that it does not kill ye, for the Slayer will not travel with ye unless it deems ye worthy.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Slayer quest is actually one of the very few sidequests in Ultima VIII.
  • The Slayer grants a 10% chance that the next blow is deadly, regardless of how many hit points the enemy has remaining.
