Devastation is an apocalyptic spell from the Thaumaturgic discipline of Pagan magic which calls down destruction on the entire world.
Description[edit]
It is functionally similar to the Armageddon spell found in Britannian magic, whereby all lifeforms inhabiting the plane upon which it is invoked are swiftly eradicated. For this reason it is believed, and perhaps self-evident, that Devastation has never been inflicted upon the civilization of Pagan. Should the incantation be unleashed, however, the realm will become permeated with a burning haze and bombarded by a meteoric rain of fire, in the midst of which any living entities will combust spectacularly, before the spellcaster too is struck down by a bolt of magic lightning. This runs contrary to the few writings available for Devastation, which erroneously assume the caster's survival absent any practical observation of the spell's effects.
Being of Pagan magic, Devastation appears only in Ultima VIII, and may be purchased from Mythran for 1000 obsidians.
Lore[edit]
“ | This spell, first formulated by what could only have been an insane mage, is designed to disrupt the very fabric of life throughout the world. All creatures and beings, save the crazed Thaumaturge who casts this spell, face instant eradication. As far as I can tell, there has never been a successful casting of this spell. – from The Chronicle of Pagan (Ultima VIII)

“ | Warning... This power contained within the words of this spell render it worthy of its name. The very nature of the energies released is designed to disrupt the very fabric of living existence on a plane, thus annihilating all life save that of the mage who casts this spell. To know this spell, obviously formulated by a violently deranged wizard bent on world domination, is a tremendous responsibility, for invoking the words is a constant temptation for any experimenter. Fortunately, no one who knows the spell has yet shirked that responsibility, as far as I can tell... – from Devastation (Ultima VIII)
