Teleportation (concept)
This article is about a game mechanic. For other uses, see Teleportation (disambiguation).
Teleportation is the process where characters are swiftly or instantly transported to another part of the world or even a different world.
Methods[edit]
Teleportation is performed by a variety of means, some of it from naturally occurring phenomena and some by artificial means. In all cases, the process is magical.
Gates[edit]
- Main article: Moongate
Naturally occurring gates appeared first in Ultima II as time doors, which transported the Stranger not just through space, but also time. Beginning in Ultima III, moongates would transport the Stranger to different part of the Sosarian map, according to the phases of the moons. In Ultima IV, Britannia afforded the same resource. Starting with Ultima IV it was revealed that the Stranger was brought to Lord British’s realm through blue or red moongates at the break of the games. Beginning with Ultima V, the Avatar was able to summon moongates, as well as select their destinations, via the Orb of the Moons.
Moongates also enjoy the distinction of transporting the Stranger to other worlds:
- A moongate is the only way to reach the Ethereal Void in some games.
- In Ultima VII the evil Guardian attempted to enter Britannia through the Black Gate.
- Another Black Gate appears at the end of Ultima VIII transporting the Avatar to the Nexus of the Worlds.
Teleport Storms[edit]
- Main article: Teleport storms
In Ultima VII Part Two naturally occurring teleport storms snatched some of the Avatar’s equipment, displaced a lighthouse and transported the Royal Mint to the Serpent Isle.
Spells[edit]
Several spells can perform teleportation:
- Lib Rec/Blink/Dag Acron/Portal/Teleport: teleports short ranges
- Gate Travel: a Britannian spell
- There are various spells to traverse dungeons. At times some are explicitly identified as teleportation spells, while at other times, they are depicted as movement spells:
- Help: performs emergency teleportation
- Mark, Recall: allows the mage to select specific destinations then teleport to there at some later time
- Teleportation
- Gate Travel: a runic spell
- Fetch
Teleport pads[edit]
- Main article: Teleport pads
Teleport pads will teleport individuals who step on the pad to a fixed location. Sometimes this feature is two-way, and the teleported person can simply reverse course and return to the original pad, but sometimes it is a one-way trip.
Supporting Devices[edit]
- Orb of the Moons: available in several games since Ultima V. Causes moongates to appear in remote locations
- Serpent Jawbone: allows teleportation to Serpent Gates in Ultima VII Part Two
- Recall item: allows teleporting to teleport pads in Ultima VIII
Miscellaneous[edit]
- The Wall of Lights teleports the Avatar to the Ethereal Void.
- Starting with Ultima IV in some games when critical party members die, Lord British will resurrect them and then apparently teleport them to his throne room.
- Blackrock jewel: the magical by-product accidentally created by the Guardian in Ultima Underworld II. The Avatar uses it to teleport to other worlds.
