The player's guide

This player's guide is included with copies of Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds, sometimes as a physical paperback book and sometimes as a PDF file.

Description[edit]

Like with the first Underworld game, it was deemed a must-have due to the entirely new type of game it represented, as well as the high complexity coming with it. If anything, the topics are discussed even more in detail. It goes into extensive detail about the character creation, how to actually control the game and interact with the surroundings, combat and the magic system. Following that is a section with general gameplay tips and a list of all the known spells as well as an explanation of the various skills. Also, some designer's notes were added at the end.

Other Editions[edit]

The guide was included without alteration in the Underworld Series. The European editions of the book were translated into German, French and Polish. The Japanese versions for the PC-98 and FM-Towns are identical to each other, despite being from two different companies. They sport a new cover and the content is translated to Japanese.

GOG Edition[edit]

The version issued with the GOG release of the game is missing the Starting the Game section on the first page. Likely this is because the section had instructions for starting the original game in DOS and this would confuse modern players using the GOG release which is handled via an included launcher. Other than this change the manual is identical to the original version.

Unfortunately not only were the DOS instructions removed but a bit of the instructions for the beginning of the game. The manual begins on page 2 with the Creating Your Character section.

Specifically, page 1 is missing this text after the DOS part:

An introductory screen appears, reading, “ORIGIN An Electronic Arts Company Presents,” followed by “A LookingGlass Technologies Game.” As the game finishes loading, this screen is replaced by a title screen (“ULTIMA Underworld II Labyrinth of Worlds”). If you have not played the game before (or have never “saved” your previous adventures), the game proceeds to the Introduction. This provides background information you need to complete your adventure.

If you are in a hurry, or you have already seen the Introduction, press Esc to cancel any preliminary screen and bring on the following screen. If you have “saved games” on your hard disk, the game automatically skips the Introduction and goes directly to the main menu.

Afterward, you are presented with several choices:

Introduction. Repeats the introductory sequence you just saw.
Create Character. Allows you to set up a brand-new player-character.
Acknowledgments. Lists the names of the people who created the game.
Journey Onward. When you have a character, select this option to choose your saved game and begin playing. You will not see this option unless you have a saved game.

Select an option by clicking on the option you want or by using the cursor keys to change the highlighted selection and pressing Enter. If this is your first game, you must select “Create Character” in order to start the game.
