The play guide

The reference guide for Ultima VIII: Pagan was called a "playguide" and serves as a quick-start guide.

Description[edit]

The new engine for Ultima VIII required detailed explanations. This guide, no longer called a reference card, explains how to play the game, going into detail on how the Avatar can move, how to interact with the world, and how to call up the various windows. It also explains the inventory and stats system of the game, before showing the various keyboard shortcuts available.

As a curiosity, the guide starts by offering definitions and explanations of the words "pentagram" and "Pagan". This was added due to concerns about the negative reactions that sometimes accompany the use of these occult symbols.

Other Editions[edit]

The guide, with minor alterations, was also available translated into German, French, Spanish, and Italian. The fully translated Japanese version for the PC-98 features a different cover and page borders, but retains the same content. The translated guides for the Taiwanese and Korean editions were each integrated into a single manual with the rest of the game's documentation.
