Ultima VII The Black Gate Install Guide
The release of Ultima VII was accompanied by an installation guide. Much of this guide focused on easing the challenges of running a resource-heavy game on an ill-suited operating system like MS-DOS, particularly due to its reliance on advanced memory management.

Ultima VII was the second Ultima game to separate its technical aspects from the reference material, doing so by producing a separate install guide (the first being Ultima Underworld). The game's highly complex installation and set-up process – especially due to the Voodoo Memory Manager (a third-party memory management tool designed to circumvent DOS's memory limitations) – required detailed documentation.
Other Editions[edit]
The install guide, while containing the same core content, was altered for the European release to be a multilingual affair, featuring English, French, German, and Italian sections. This, of course, made the guide significantly larger than its American counterpart. The Polish and Spanish versions were fully translated into a single language each. The Hit Squad release in the UK adopted the styling of the multilingual version, but contained only the English section.
The American and European editions of The Complete Ultima VII combined the installation guides of both games into a single guide, altering them to fit the CD-ROM format. A later budget release combined it with both reference cards into a single booklet. In the European budget release, it was combined with the reference cards and printed only in the language of the market where it was sold. The Australian budget release of the combined booklet is similar, but features a different form factor and cover.
