The Talismans of Sir Cabirus are eight magical items found in Ultima Underworld.

Description[edit]

The eight talismans are magical items representing the Virtues that were originally collected by Sir Cabirus in his quest to somehow bring the various groups in his Abyss colony closer together. Each of the eight talismans holds special meaning for one of the Eight Virtues. Some also have additional powers, while others are simply symbolic in nature. Sadly, Sir Cabirus died shortly after collecting them all and had neglected to leave orders which group should get which talisman. In the following chaos, each group tried to gain the talismans they thought were intended for them, resulting in a plundering and scattering of the talismans throughout the Abyss. They were all recovered by the Avatar in Ultima Underworld and used to banish the Slasher of Veils by casting them into the lava in the chamber of virtues.

Lore[edit]

Secondly, there is the matter of the theft of the eight mystic devices - which Sir Cabirus collected before his death. It was Cabirus' plan to cement the harmony of his settlement by presenting each of these artifacts to a different group or faction among his community. Unfortunately, he did not leave a guide as to how to distribute the items. This caused great disagreement among the Colonists, and certain factions seized those objects which they believed Cabirus meant for them. Even the grave of Sir Cabirus was desecrated by colonists hungry for treasure.

Sir Cabirus collected eight great Talismans, each embodying a certain Virtue -- he was a great one for Virtue, was our Cabirus -- and it was well known that he intended them to come to the leaders of the various groups here in the Abyss. Well, WE never saw them. If they still exist, they must be lost.

Alttext:Corby.png

Sir Cabirus did gather a number of artifacts with interesting properties. He thought the use of these artifacts might assist the colonists as they pursued the way of the Avatar. Unfortunately, the objects were misused by the folk he hoped to help.

Each of the eight items gathered by Sir Cabirus embodied one of the Virtues. But those who now possess the items keep them merely for their intrinsic value, not their higher purpose.

They numbered eight, and Cabirus did intend them to go each to one of the Leaders of the eight groups who settled the Abyss. Alas, he perished, and all eight were lost.

'Tis said they were a Book, bottle of Wine, a Shield, a Sword, a Taper, a Standard, a Cup, and a Ring. Each was imbued with the potent power of a single Virtue, and 'tis said they confer Virtue both in the seeking and the finding.

Book of Honesty[edit]

Alttext:Morlock.png

The book was one of Sir Cabirus' Talismans. 'Twas written by Ravenhurst of Moonglow, who collected great works of honesty and essays upon Truth. It hath great power, both intrinsically and for the wisdom contained therein.

Wine of Compassion[edit]

I know where there is a bottle of the so-called Wine of Compassion! Bah! Such foolishness. Only babes and fools believe in such fairy-stories.

Shield of Valor[edit]

Alttext:Shak.png

The Shield of Valor, it were named. Never a finer one did I see. 'Twas Blackthorne's once, or so I've 'eard tell. But it were one o' those things easier to set aside than to take up again, an' he left it when he went to become the conscience for all the world. Ach, but that were a mess.

– from Shak (Ultima Underworld)

Sword of Justice[edit]

Alttext:Shak.png

Aye, now there was a weapon! Willful, they say, but potent beyond mortal blades. It had a sense of fair play, did Caliburn. 'Twasn't for naught they called it the Sword o' Justice. 'Twas forged by the great Flamebeard himself.

– from Shak (Ultima Underworld)

Taper of Sacrifice[edit]

Alttext:Meredith.png

Thou wilt find that the light it produces is quite steady, for it continually sacrifices of itself to produce light for thee.

Cabirus imbued it with virtue, however, and although it consumes itself constantly to provide light, it is continually replenished as well.

Standard of Honor[edit]

As for the Standard of Honor, it is said that it is awaiting one who would perform a sufficiently honorable deed.

Identification[edit]

Alttext:Shak.png

Aye, a beauty, this Caliburn. [...] A fine blade, is she not? 'Twill serve ye well, if ye're careful to use it in a just cause.

[...]

That's it all right, the Shield of Valor itself. Lucky ye are to have found it. Never a better shield was there fashioned, to my knowledge.

That's the Sword of Justice, one of the Talismans of Virtue created by Cabirus. Not too many finer weapons wilt thou see.

[...]

That is the Ring of Humility. It has no magic powers, but still the Virtuous energy given it by Cabirus is undeniable.

[...]

That is the Shield of Valor, one of Cabirus' Talismans. It will protect your front side admirably, but 'twill not help thee if thou dost turn thy back on an enemy.

[...]

That is the Taper of Sacrifice, one of the Talismans of Virtue created by Cabirus. Its light may not be great, but it will never fail thee.

[...]

Ah, that is the Cup of Wonder. 'Twas fashioned by Sir Cabirus himself, as one of his Talismans. Beautiful, is it not?

[...]

The Wine of Compassion that is, one of Cabirus' Talismans. It was of a fine vintage, but perhaps it is past its prime now.

[...]

That is the Book of Honesty, one of the Talismans of Cabirus. It is said that the power of truth contained in the tome is such that its pages cannot be torn out.

[...]

That is the Standard of Honor, one of Cabirus' Talismans. It was to be a symbol of courage throughout all Britannia.
