Justice is one of the Eight Virtues of Britannia.
Description[edit]
Justice, founded on the principles of Truth and Love, is the devotion to truth, tempered by love. It is the wisdom that perceives what is right and what is wrong in human action. Yew, located deep within the heart of the Deep Forest, a gathering place for druids in their pursuit of Justice and the site of the High Court of Britannia and nurtures the great legal and judicial minds who practice there. Their devotion to this particular virtue allows the druids to further their skills and magical powers equally.
The Shrine of Justice is situated north of Yew, on a peninsula at the coast of the sea.
Justice through the Ages[edit]
Various messages throughout the ages, given by the shrine or the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, show how Justice does apply to the lives of people.
Ultima IV[edit]
Meditating at the Shrine of Justice will give these insights:
- "To take the gold of others is injustice not soon forgotten. Take only thy due!"
- "Attack not a peaceful citizen for that action deserves strict punishment!"
- "Kill not a non-evil beast for they deserve not death, even if in hunger they attack thee!"
Ultima V[edit]
Quest form the shrine: "'Tis now thy sacred Quest to go unto the Codex and learn the weakness of the Unjust!"
Answer from the Codex: "Those who inflict injustice upon others, cannot expect fair treatment unto themselves."
Ultima VI[edit]
Wisdom of the shrine: "Justice without force is impotent. Force without justice is tyranny."
Blackthorn's Law[edit]
During Blackthorn's tyranny, Justice was twisted and turned into a draconian law: "Thou shalt confess to thy crime and suffer its just punishment, or thou shalt be put to death."
Lore[edit]
“ | Justice is the devotion to truth, tempered by love. – from The Book of Lore (Ultima V)
|
---|
“ | Justice is the wisdom that perceives what is right and wrong in human action. |
---|
“ | Wherein Truth and Courage are reconciled lie the secrets of Justice. It bears no moderation, for it does not shine in the fog of war. The fiery will that spurs one towards Justice can lose sight of the Truth. To judge with a level eye demands Truth and Courage of conviction to pursue the Truth. In reward, Justice shall give temperament to your spirit. |

Trivia[edit]
- The statement of the shrine in Ultima VI is a quote by French philosopher Blaise Pascal. [1]
- The overview of Justice in Ultima IX's manual, Journal, erroneously describes the Virtue to be Truth combined with Courage (the Principles forming Honor) rather than Truth tempered by Love. It is unknown how such a fundamental error slipped by.
