Cador is the overseer of operations at the Vesper branch of the Britannian Mining Company (BMC) during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Cador was a hard-worker and committed family man, attempting to do his best to support his wife, Yvella and daughter, Catherine in the midst of the strife-filled mining village. A man of few words, the miner seemed hardened by the often hostile environment of Vesper, and while he tolerated the presence of workers such as Lap-Lem under his employ, he did little to imply that he did not share his wife's racist sentiments regarding the gargish people.[1]

A devoted member of the Fellowship, Cador also appeared to be a point person for the loosely assembled Vesperian followers of the organization, and he hosted Elizabeth and Abraham during their visit to the town, in which they laid out plans for an officiated branch to be established there.[2]

Should the hero reveal to his spouse that their daughter was secretly visiting the gargoyle, For-Lem during the day, they would be given firm assurances that Cador would "take care" of the situation.[3] The child would later reveal that the gargoyle had been murdered.[4]

Lore[edit]

The mining company began to hire Gargoyles because they lack intelligence and work cheaply. Being so far away, they have no idea how poorly the pitiful beasts work. I am surprised Cador and Mara are willing to continue working with the one that is still there.

Trivia[edit]

  • In an earlier draft of the Ultima VII's plot, the character of Cador was named "Talor."[5]
  • In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Cador speaks openly about the BMC's mining of blackrock, claiming the mineral is used for decorative purposes. He also reveals that Eliza and Abraham are representatives of the company, and that they had passed through recently to observe mining operations.[6]
  • Dialogue in the Ultima VII usecode appears for Cador which implies that he and Mara may be killed in a bar room brawl, similarly to Anmanivas and Foranamo, should the hero claim to be the Avatar when speaking to them – although this incident does not appear to be reproducible in gameplay.[7]
