For-Lem is a wingless gargoyle working as a factorum in Vesper in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
Keeping himself afloat financially with odd jobs, For-Lem's true passion was the history and mythology of the gargoyle race, hoping to keep alive the narrative traditions his people had enjoyed before the days of the "False Prophet." Having already authored Thy Message Received! with the assistance of the scholar Jillian,[1] the wingless gargoyle was also active in attempting to give a voice to the persecutions his people faced, speaking highly of individuals such as Ansikart and Lap-Lem who managed to weather the bigotry of the Vesperian humans.[2]
Should the Avatar follow the human girl Catherine from her home on the eastern bank of Vesper's oasis, the hero would learn that the child had formed a friendship with the Gargish storyteller, coming to his home each day at noon to listen to his tales of the past. Realizing the peril they would face in light of Catherine's prejudiced family, For-Lem would beg the hero to keep their meetings a secret, fearing that the child would be punished.[3] Should the Avatar betray their confidence and inform the girl's mother regardless, For-Lem would eventually be murdered by Catherine's father, Cador.[4]
