This article is about a character from Ultima VII. For a character from the Nintendo port of Ultima III, see Catherine (NES).

Catherine is a young child living in Vesper in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

The precocious daughter of Yvella and Cador, Catherine had not yet learned to fear the otherness of the town's gargoyles, and without her parents' knowledge had befriended the historian, For-Lem, who told her stories of Britannia's gargish past each day at noon. A bright and happy child, such an education had enabled her to be one of the few to recognize the Avatar of legend should they pass through Vesper, and the polite little girl would always greet the hero as such.[1]

Should the hero learn of For-Lem and Catherine's friendship after hearing the concerns of Yvella, the champion of virtue would be burdened with having to decide whether or not to inform the bigoted couple of their child's activities. For-Lem, concerned for Catherine's well-being, would beg the hero to keep their secret,[2] although ultimately the Avatar could decide to inform on them, leaving Catherine's mother distraught and ready to have her husband "take care" of the offending gargoyle.[3] The child would later reveal that her father murdered her friend for her "protection" and would run crying from the Avatar if approached about the topic, blaming the hero for her companion's death.[4]

Lore[edit]

Just yesterday Yvella, Cador's wife, said she believes her daughter is being harassed by the Gargoyles. Even I have seen little Catherine straying too close to the oasis. It would not surprise me if one those daemons nabbed her when no one was watching.

Trivia[edit]

  • Dialogue in the Ultima VII usecode appears for Catherine which implies that Cador and Mara may be killed in a bar room brawl, similarly to Anmanivas and Foranamo, should the hero claim to be the Avatar when speaking to them - although this incident doesn't appear to be reproducible in gameplay.[5]
