Lord Blackthorn, founder and leader of the Oppression.

The Oppression is an organization in Ultima V that opposes the Resistance against Blackthorn’s regime, designed to root out any opposition to his rule.

History[edit]

The members of the Oppression did everything to help their ruler, going deep to the dark side. The Avatar learned that very quickly during various encounters. The hero could infiltrate the Oppression to get possession of the black badge. However, other than that, the Oppression had no significant part in the quest itself, as their members were rarely encountered and did not otherwise contribute to the quest.

When Blackthorn was banished from Britannia, the Oppression also disappeared.

Lore[edit]

Vile were their works, and together these devoted prodigies of Evil rose quickly through the ranks of Blackthorn’s Oppression. So well did they serve the Dark King’s cause that they were rewarded with a private castle of their own... in exchange for their souls, some might say

Prominent Members[edit]

How to join[edit]

To join the Oppression, the followings steps must be taken:

  • Agreeing with Tactus that Blackthorn's rule is good.
  • Mentioning being sent by Tactus when approaching Judge Dryden.
  • Mentioning being sent by Dryden when approaching Flain.
  • Telling the password to Elistaria to get the black badge.

Technically, though, only the last step is necessary, since the password is always impera and the only real benefit to joining the Oppression is the black badge.

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

In Ultima V: Lazarus, the Oppression is much improved and its presence is felt everywhere. There are many quests for the Oppression, and even an alternative ending, with Blackthorn winning. Also, wearing the black badge opens up many dialogue options.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, unlike in the original where no trace was found, the Avatar does encounter the aftermath of the Oppression's actions. Dr. Cat tells of Ferru’s disappearance and the old wounds of that dark time. Charlotte had become a recluse after her fanaticism of Blackthorn's laws alienated her family, as David and Anthony tell the Avatar.

Trivia[edit]

  • The password of the Oppression is impera.
