Description: Companion of the Avatar
Transcript: Saduj

Saduj is found during the events of Ultima V, sneaking around the roof of Castle Britannia in the night, acting suspiciously.

Description[edit]

At first Saduj didn't say much. He claimed to be a gardener if prompted. However, after the Avatar revealed to be a member of the Oppression by saying the password "IMPERA", Saduj became much more talkative. Saduj was a spy sent by Lord Blackthorn to get possession of the sandalwood box, so that it could not be used to rescue Lord British from the dungeon Doom. He then offered his services to the Avatar's party.[1]

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Weldon the gardener would be infuriated if the hero mentioned Saduj and his claimed profession, feeling that Biggs was attempting to replace him as head gardener.[2][3][4]

Strategy[edit]

Should the player let Saduj join, he will betray the party in combat as soon as possible.

The usefulness of Saduj is in the gold earned by selling his equipment.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the alleged journal of the Avatar discovered by historians Robert DeMain and Carlotta Stein, the Avatar describes Saduj as dark-skinned and somewhat shorter than Iolo (Iolo talked with Saduj instead). His hair is described to be black and clothing consisted of a very dark tunic and breeches as well as a cap on his head.
  • Amusingly, one can let Saduj such that he appears as the second character in the party’s roster; and then make one's way to Blackthorn’s castle without entering into a battle. Getting captured then means that Blackthorn will execute him, and Saduj's ashes will appear in the Codex.
  • Appropriately, "Saduj" is Judas spelled backwards.
  • Even worse, in Lazarus, Saduj steals the sandalwood box and flees, meaning an instant game over.
