Transcript: Anthony

Anthony is the son of David and Charlotte of Greyhaven in Ultima V.

Description[edit]

Anthony revealed that his mother forced him to recite Blackthorn’s laws often in her zeal to follow the regime. Thanks to his young age and naivety, Anthony had been already influenced so far, that he really believed that it had to be this way. Telling him that Blackthorn's laws were in error caused him to disbelieve the hero and run away.[1]

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Anthony told the hero how when he wasn't doing his chores or studying, he played outside collecting seashells or learned how to play the harpsichord from Sir Kenneth the musician. He was also learning Blackthorn’s Ethics from his mother Charlotte, whose zeal to follow Blackthorn's regime was slowly rubbing off on her child. The young child spoke excitedly of his father David’s former career as a merchant, and how he eventually took over the running of the lighthouse from his friend, whom Sir Arbuthnot knew.[2]

Anthony also talked extensively about the others at Greyhaven, feeling that Kenneth could have been a famous musician, but seemed to prefer to retire to the peace and quiet of Greyhaven. The young lighthouse keeper knew little of Sir Arbuthnot, a retired knight from Serpent's Hold, other than his seeming stuffiness.

Should the Avatar tell Anthony that Blackthorn's Ethics were not the way to become an Avatar, the young child would become upset and refuse to talk to the hero again.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

The Avatar would once again meet the now mature Anthony during the Gargoyle siege of Trinsic in The Ultima 6 Project. He was now a paladin apprentice at the city, and readily agreed to Baden’s plan to free the town.

After the siege was lifted, Anthony told the Avatar that most paladins started their training as a youth, but he was a late starter, and had not begun until he was in his twenties. He attributed this to the difficult divorce between his parents David and Charlotte. Charlotte had been instructing Anthony in Blackthorn’s Ethics, but with the return of Lord British from the Underworld, Charlotte had become fanatical when her beliefs were contradicted by the Eight Virtues. This had led to a bitter divorce between David and Charlotte, where David was granted full parental custody by the druids of Yew, thanks in part to David's part in helping to break Blackthorn's siege of Serpent's Hold. Living in an isolated lighthouse had given Charlotte the opportunity to try to kidnap the young man, so David had moved his son to Trinsic where he could be better watched by the other townsfolk. He last heard his mother was living as a recluse near the Lycaeum.

Since that time, Anthony had been trained by the liked of Gruman, Sir Arbuthnot, Woolfe, and Sir Kenneth in the ways of honour to become a paladin. When Sir Kenneth left Greyhaven, he gave the young boy detailed instructions on how to build his own harpsichord. After that Anthony, built his own to practice on, but had since donated it to the Fool's Pair o' Dice so that all could enjoy the music there.
