Thrud is the blacksmith of Windemere during the time of Ultima V.
Description[edit]
After the Avatar had been told by Elistaria that Thrud had something special in store, the hero went to meet the man himself.[1]
Soon after introducing himself, Thrud boasted of how he had once murdered an entire village merely because he did not care for the food he had been served at the inn. The Avatar then asked what the special item was, and Thrud told the hero of the jeweled weapons and armour. However, the price he asked for the arms was steep – nothing less than the password of the Resistance.[2]
Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]
This is an Ultima V: Lazarus-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.
In Ultima V: Lazarus, Thrud was a cruel man who served the Oppression by forging weapons within the heart of Windemere, and using his wares to kill all who opposed Blackthorn’s rule. He was certain Lord British had died in the Underworld, and felt it only right for Lord Blackthorn to hold power, for he was the most powerful man in the land. Harboring no love for Elistaria, Thrud had been ordered to manufacture weapons for the sorceress so that she might distribute as seen fit, not allowed to sell any of his wares personally.[3]
Thrud missed his days of indiscriminate slaughter which ended when he was ordered to serve at Windemere, glorying in how he had once laid waste to an entire village with his own hand. He regaled the hero with how after a long campaign at sea, he had stopped at a small town to spend the night at its only inn as he returned home. Tired of seafaring morsels, he had ordered a large meal from the inn which had given him indigestion, leaving him bedridden for 2 days in agony. Upon recovering, he decided to enact revenge upon the innkeeper, slaughtering the man and raping his daughter. When the remainder of the town had tried to arrest him, he had destroyed them in kind. Finally, after half a day his bloodlust was abated.
If the Avatar talked to Elistaria and received the black badge, Thrud would reward the hero with the jeweled weapons and jeweled shield, a finely worked set of sword and shield which offered the hero no physical protection.[4]
Lore[edit]
“ | It has oft been said that Evil seeks to serve its own. When Lord Blackthorn came to power, espousing the demented self-servitude of enforced virtue, many who held no interests but their own at heart flocked to his side. Among them was the dark sorceress Elistaria and her mercenary cohort Thrud. Vile were their works, and together these devoted prodigies of Evil rose quickly through the ranks of Blackthorn's Oppression. So well did they serve the Dark King's cause that they were rewarded with a private castle of their own... in exchange for their souls, some might say. – from Paths of Destiny (Ultima V)

Trivia[edit]
- Agreeing to Thrud's proposition and betraying the Resistance comes at a hefty penalty to the Avatar's karma. Furthermore, the jeweled weapons and armour are purely decorative and of no actual use in combat.
- Declining the offer has another outcome – Thrud calls upon the keep's guards to attack!
