Elistaria is the dark lady of Windemere, and a very prominent member of the Oppression during the events of Ultima V.
Description[edit]
The Avatar sought her out to acquire the black badge. Upon receiving the Oppression's password, Elistaria gave the badge to the Avatar, officially welcoming the hero into the organization. A self-proclaimed practitioner of the darker aspects of magic, she also spoke of her fondness for conjuring daemons and the like. Her "best two summonings" were seen guarding the keep, poised to destroy any intruders at her command.[1]
She told the Avatar to ask Thrud for some special items (the Jeweled Sword and Shield) that might prove useful in the hero's "infiltration" of the Resistance.

The apprentice of archmage Flain, Elistaria had risen through the ranks of the Oppression, eventually coming into possession of Windemere and responsible for training new mages in the black arts so that they might better serve Lord Blackthorn. Elistaria would immediately recognize the Avatar, demanding the password for the Oppression, Impera, and should the hero fail to provide such information, would attack.[2]
Haughty and vain, Elistaria originally studied at the Lycaeum, but felt the mages there constrained themselves, perfectly happy to live a life of rigid discipline, studying the ancient texts within their library. She felt herself superior to those who voluntarily chose to forsake the dark arts, for she was not afraid to use such powers to further the Oppression’s goals and protect Lord Blackthorn. Disgusted by those who opposed his reign, she believed they must be rooted out and exterminated. Elistaria zealously served Blackthorn’s regime, stating she would gladly lay down her life for her liege if required, although, for now she was content to merely train new students, whose ranks included Edwin, Pwyll, and Alonda
She was especially proud of her home in Windemere, commenting how the Shadowlords had turned it from a pillar of shining white marble to a foreboding ebony spire, hoping to someday meet the dark lords. Proud in her accomplishments in the dark arts, she bragged to the hero about the two daemons who guarded her keep, Fraoch and Saer'bhan, hoping to someday create an army of such creatures to serve her will.
As the hero prepared to leave, Elistaria provided the hero with a black badge, which illustrated servitude to Lord Blackthorn, and directed the Avatar towards Thrud for equipment.
If the Avatar gave Sarkael the skull of Councillor Windemere in the presence of Elistaria, the daemon would use his new found freedom to attack the sorceress.[3]
Lore[edit]
“ | It has oft been said that Evil seeks to serve its own. When Lord Blackthorn came to power, espousing the demented self-servitude of enforced virtue, many who held no interests but their own at heart flocked to his side. Among them was the dark sorceress Elistaria and her mercenary cohort Thrud. Vile were their works, and together these devoted prodigies of Evil rose quickly through the ranks of Blackthorn's Oppression. So well did they serve the Dark King's cause that they were rewarded with a private castle of their own... in exchange for their souls, some might say. – from Paths of Destiny (Ultima V)
