Jonus is the Guard Captain in Jhelom in Ultima V: Lazarus.

An angry and violent man, Jonus at first merely threatened and refused to speak to the Avatar. Only after several attempts would Jonus even offer his name and occupation. Jonus would not talk to the Avatar unless the hero wore the Black Badge of Blackthorn.[1]

If the Avatar joined the Oppression, Jonus became far more talkative, commenting how he felt the other citizens of Britannia were nothing but slaves, and it was only natural for those with power to trample upon them. Jonus believed he held the most important position on the island, maintaining discipline by enforcing Blackthorn's Ethic of Valor, feeling that without his constant vigilance the island would fall apart. He further told the hero that the true warrior was not only personally courageous, but would abide no weakness in those around him, and should punish all those who showed the slightest cowardice, whether they be friends or family.

The Guard Captain felt the citizens of Jhelom were weak, following a perverted since of Valor that allowed weakness in others. He would have near all the citizens of the town destroyed for their effeminate nature, if not for the need of followers to rule. Jonus lamented that the current mayor Fel had never enforced discipline upon the citizens, and plotted against him, and that Bantral was a slovering lackey who at least knew his place. The horrid man lusted after Shannon, hoping to force himself upon her, and raged against the bard Trian who also vied for her affection. He was certain Thorne with his wanderings aided the Resistance, and tasked the hero with following him and reporting back with proof. After receiving the Mantra of Valor from Thorne[2], Ra, the hero could betray this information to Jonus.

Jonus hoped to eliminate Trian by having the Avatar plant an incriminating letter upon his person. The hero could choose to betray Jonus and reveal the plot to Trian, or plant the letter upon Trian, leading to the man's incarceration and death.[3]

If the Avatar had spoken to Ean hiding on a small island to the north[4], the hero could choose to betray his location to Jonus, leading to the former mayor's capture and death.
