Trian is a bard living in Jhelom during the time of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

Talking with Trian, the man first spoke of Courage, and that his friend Thorne often visits the Shrines. If the Avatar asked about dungeon Destard and expressed the wish to explore it, Trian thought of the Avatar as suicidal, adding that it was illegal. However, he still gave the hint that saying things backwards to Goeth should help get the Word of Power from him.[1]

A charismatic bard and accomplished adventurer, Trian sought to continuously enhance his endeavors in both pursuits. Still, he admitted he had been negligent on the adventuring side, and was currently planning a new adventure with his partner Thorne. Trian had high praise for his companion, and said the man was an adventuresome soul with a quick blade, a love of travel, and a number of stories which he had developed into his songs. Trian also noted that Thorne frequently visited the Shrine of Valor, and was a wealth of information on the Britannian Shrines. The further acknowledged that Thorne had also traveled with Gremnor in the past, but the greying innkeeper had since given up his adventuring way and had settled down to run the Warrior's Stead.[2]

Greatly in love with his own musical talent, he was quick to share a romantic ballad he had written for Shannon, although, the hardened warrior was loathe to admit she found his attention flattering.[3] He felt that Shannon had been too harsh towards the Oppression, and her skilled blade would not protect her indefinitely, hoping she would leave Jhelom with him. Filled with legitimate concern for the Shannon's health, he noted that the Guard Captain Jonus lusted after her, and would likely soon resort to violence to possess her.

Trian didn't know the Word of Power for Destard, but felt that senile Goeth, a former member of the Great Council, likely had that information. He told the hero how Goeth had slowly slipped into insanity, going from inverting his word order to now frequently pronouncing words backwards. Nicole had been doing her best to feed and house him in his madness, but Goeth was loathe to be taken care of.

If the Avatar wished to learn about Lord Windemere’s assault on Jhelom, the hero could meet Trian at his home after 11 o’clock at night to hear the tale. Trian recounted how Councillor Windemere, enraged by the death of Aegean, sought to attack Jhelom, and crush Lord Blackthorn’s forces. In the following battle, Lord Windemere was defeated, and Blackthorn retained control of the town.

Despised by Jonus for courting Shannon,[4] after joining the Oppression the hero could choose to plant an incriminating letter upon his person while talking to Trian within his home, so that Jonus could arrest him and have him put to death. The Avatar could also choose to betray Jonus and reveal the plan to Trian, allowing the bard to read and destroy the letter.
