Ean is the former mayor of Jhelom, hiding on a small island to the northeast in Ultima V: Lazarus.
The former outspoken mayor of Jhelom, Ean had ruled Jhelom for many years, and had then retired to run The Sword and Keg, appointing Fel to his former position. Ean had vehemently supported Sir Simon's claim to the throne over Lord Blackthorn's rule, and thus was forced to flee Jhelom after the Oppression enacted martial law throughout the land, pretending to be a hermit on a small spider infested island northeast of the town. [1]
The former mayor was unwilling to talk with the hero unless the Avatar supplied the Resistance password, having joined the organization to thwart Blackthorn's plans. Telling how Jonus and Lord Blackthorn had been trying to subdue Jhelom's fiery spirit, he felt the citizens of the town would only bear such treatment temporarily, and he himself hoped to someday slay Jonus for his treatment of the town. Ean related the details of Jhelom's fall at the hands of Blackthorn's army during The Battle For Valor, telling how the citizens of the town had prepared a defense, but Blackthorn attacked in superior numbers. The warrior Geoffrey had attempted to challenge Blackthorn in single combat, but had been defeated by the dark lord and forced to accept exile, and with that Jhelom was lost. The only citizen he noted who had accepted Blackthorn's rule was Bantral due to the poor treatment the man had received from the other citizens of Jhelom during his youth.
Ean had high praise for Fel, saying the man had a strong sword arm and was a staunch supporter of the citizens of Jhelom. Still, after the loss of his wife Caitlin in a shipwreck near Skara Brae, Fel had started to languish, doing the tasks required of mayor but lacking his former passion. Ean noted that Caitlin had carried a locket received as a wedding present, and hoped the return of that memento might ease Fel's suffering.
Ean would graciously receive Landon's Resistance weapons shipment.
If the Avatar spoke to Jonus after joining the Oppression, the hero could betray Ean's hiding place, leading to the old man's arrest and death.[2]
