The Sword and Keg is a tavern in Jhelom, appearing in Ultima V and Ultima VI.
History[edit]
The tavern was founded after the closure of The Bloody Pub. During Ultima V, the tavern was run by Nicole. Later, in Ultima VI, The Sword and Keg was run by Arvin, and the serving girl Lyssandra. The bard Van Kellian and Culham were always found playing there. A number of brawlers including Jerris and Stelnar could be found there, and Heftimus McPry was frequently found begging outside the bar. The rune of Valor could be found hidden inside a tiny rat hole. In the evenings, bar brawls were common.
Sometime between Ultima VI and Ultima VII the tavern closed down and by the Age of Armageddon it got replaced by The Bunk and Stool.
Lore[edit]
“ | Nomaan, the weaponsmith, does a healthy business, even though he spends a good deal of his time over at the Sword & Keg. It’s a cheerful, lusty, down to earth sort of tavern, where the sin of moderation is rarely practiced. Bards are always welcome there, but even when none are to be found, the fighters will sing their own songs, striving to make up in loudness and enthusiasm what they lack in experience. They’ve worked the Mantra of Valor into one of their ballads, I hear. Fact is, most everyone in town passes their time at the Sword & Keg, whether natives of the town, or travellers staying over at the Wayfarer Inn. [sic] – from The Book of Prophecy (Ultima VI)
