Liana, from Ultima VII
Species: human
Appearances
Ultima VII
Location: Vesper

Liana is the secretary of mayor Auston of Vesper during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Liana was a catty and opinionated official, having little tolerance for individuals outside of her parochial sense of normalcy and even less for the gargish race. If asked, she would speak disparagingly of Yongi's love of drink, Eldroth's failing memory and Mara's perceived masculinity, having few good words for anyone outside of herself.[1]

If asked about the gargoyles, Liana would make fast use of the racial slur, "daemon," and could provide literature from the separatist Britannian Purity League calling for their deportation. She would further admit that she felt that the mayor was reluctant to "take sides" on such issues, hinting that she felt decisive action should be taken against the already ghettoized gargoyle population.[2]

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Key to the Black Gate, Liana provides Anton with information about Vesper and her description of the area is a part of the work which the scholar compiles on behalf of the Avatar. In her discussion with Anton, the bigoted official reveals that she believes Auston is pushing toward the forcible deportation of the Gargish population, although the mayor himself gives no indication of this.[3]
  • In an earlier draft of the Ultima VII's plot, Liana was engaged to Vesper's constable, a man named Jon who is not present in the final version of the game.[4]
  • In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Liana never mentions any ill-will toward the gargoyles, constraining her bile to the human residents of the town.[5]
  • Dialogue in the Ultima VII usecode appears for Liana which implies that Cador and Mara may be killed in a bar room brawl, similarly to Anmanivas and Foranamo, should the hero claim to be the Avatar when speaking to them – although this incident does not appear to be reproducible in game play.[6]
