The Britannian Purity League (BPL) is a racial separatist movement which appears to seek the removal of gargoyles from human-dominated settlements in Britannia in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Little is known of the BPL, as the primary evidence of the group's existence were a number of propagandist pamphlets, reading "Keep Britannia Clean - Send the Gargoyles Back!" To where precisely the group wished to send the gargish race back, however, is unclear, given that the original gargish homelands had been long destroyed by the time of the BPL's operations.[1]

Lore[edit]

Throughout its growth, Vesper has remained a good, stable home for hardworking miners and merchant suppliers to live. That was, until they started moving here. The mining company began to hire Gargoyles because they lack intelligence and work cheaply. Being so far away, they have no idea how poorly the pitiful beasts work. I am surprised Cador and Mara are willing to continue working with the one that is still there. What is his name... Lap-Lem, I believe. At least Cador had the good sense to get rid of the other one after a few months.

Trivia[edit]

  • The BPL's politics mirror movements on Earth – in which there were a number of historical precedents of majority groups wishing to expel integrated minorities.
  • Separatist sentiments in reality are often far stranger and more complex than those portrayed in Britannia. Many early real-world separatist groups associated themselves with the abolitionist movement appeared to act out of the belief that African deportation was ultimately in the black race's best interests, making them well-intentioned, if misguided, activists. These groups in America even later helped to shape radical black supremacy movements, in which disenfranchised people of African descent, feeling the white race to be inherently evil, advocated for a return to Africa that they might be free of corrupting Caucasian influences.[2][3]
