The Ultima V Enhanced Sprites Patch was created by Zhelkas for the PC version in February 2025.
It is a follow-up to the earlier Ultima V Red Tabard patch, with Zhelkas making far more extensive edits to the game's sprites.
Several sprites are edited, including the Avatar, Lord Blackthorn, city guards, shopkeepers, jesters, gazers, orcs, and reapers.
Zhelkas edited the TILES.16 file to change the sprite colors. Zhelkas used an executable that compressed and decompressed the TILES.16 file, created by Reddit user behindtimes.
The patch replaces the TILES.16 file with a different one that changes the various sprites. It is recommended to make backups of this file first.
Features[edit]
- Changes the Avatar sprite's tabard to red with a gold ankh when on foot, using the magic carpet, on horseback, and when looking in a mirror.
- Adds a red cross to Lord Blackthorn's tabard, to incorporate the Ultima Online sigil of Chaos.
- Adds a silver snake to city guards' tabards, to incorporate Lord British's sigil into their uniforms.
- Shopkeepers have red trousers, to match the generic NPC sprite colors.
- All three classes have their respective principle colors worked into their sprites: Fighters have a red cape, bards have green-and-yellow motley, and mages have light blue moons and stars on their robes.
- Jesters now have a white collar on top of their red outfits.
- Gazers are now purple and green, to match their sprites when viewed from the first-person perspective in dungeons.
- Orcs are now green and have clothing.
- Reapers are now brown to look more like trees, and to match their sprites when viewed from the first-person perspective in dungeons.
