"Gwino" has been changed to "Gweno".

The Ultima I Spelling Fix, created by Zhelkas for the 1986 PC version, corrects two major spelling errors in Ultima I.

Richard Garriott, by his own admission, was not a great speller, and the early Ultima games often contained spelling errors. This patch was posted to Reddit and the Ultima Codex in May 2024.

Zhelkas fixed the spelling errors using a hex editor, meaning it was possible to change existing letters but not to add new ones. Therefore "Gwino" could not be named "Gwenno" using this method.

The patch replaces the files MONDAIN.EXE, OUT.EXE, and SPACE.EXE with corrected versions. It is recommended to make backups of these files first.

Notably, Richard Garriott was contacted by an Ultima fan following this patch being published in May 2024, asking him if "Gwino" was intended to be Gwenno. He confirmed on his Twitter account that Gwino is the same character as Gwenno.
