Thaumaturgy
Thaumaturgy is the only magic on Pagan, which stands outside of the magic of the four Titans. Basically, it accesses the Ether directly, thus there is no need for a titanic connection. This means its effects are not connected to either of four elements, or to a combination of several of them, making it a very versatile school of magic. As Mythran himself admits, it does borrow parts here and there from the other schools of magic.
This article will cover this school of magic, which actually is only practiced by one person on Pagan, the old and wise Mythran.
Spell Scrolls[edit]
Magic scrolls are the simplest form of magic of this school and are found surprisingly commonly throughout Pagan. They do not require any preparations nor magical skill and just have to be read to cast the spell. However, these scrolls expire after one use and disappear entirely, with exception of one special spell.
The scrolls are as follows:
Name | Picture | Availability | Use | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Restore to Sight Scroll | Most places | Reveals invisible objects concealed by magic as the Reveal spell. Turns user visible as well. | – | |
Scroll of Dispelling Portals | Purchased for 50 obsidians from Mythran. | This scrolls is essential to complete the game. Useful to open entrances sealed by magics whether they are magical walls or magically locked doors. | This is a special spell. Written by Mythran and never runs out of charges, despite what he says when selling it. | |
Scroll of Healing | Most places | Works as the Healing Touch spell. Minor healing. | – | |
Scroll of Invisibility | Most places | Similar to the Fade from Sight spell. Turns caster invisible for a limit time. | – | |
Scroll of Restoration | Most places | Improves the quality of your health, similar to the Restoration spell. Eliminates wounds, maiming or disease. | Damages a fully healed subject. | |
Scroll of Trap Destruction | Most places | Destroys nearby traps. | Can cause injury to those nearby. | |
Scroll of Trap Detection | Most places | Detects nearby traps. | – |
The Ritual to Gain Spells[edit]
The art of actually creating the spells of Thaumaturgy for use is quite simple. First, the mage needs a spellbook of the spell in question they wish to cast. Next, the needed reagents have to be acquired. Finally, the correct Words of Power have to be spoken, while holding all of these things and reading the spellbook. The reagents will vanish, while the spellbook will be powered up. Now the spell can be used as often as the mage wishes, with only the mana of the caster being the limit.
These spellbooks and reagents usually can be bought from Mythran. He also sells the needed Earth and Fire reagents, making him the only source outside these schools of magic. He however, has not all of the reagents of these schools for sale, only those that are needed for his spells.

The Spells[edit]
The Following Spells are available for the Thaumaturgist:
Spell | Words of Power | Reagents | Description | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Confusion Blast | IN QUAS WIS | EY BW SC OB BR | Makes the foe lose any will to fight and leave the caster alone. | |
Meteor Shower | KAL DES FLAM YLEM | VA DI SC BR BM | Calls a destructive meteor shower, which won't discriminate between friend and foe. These meteor showers do stack as well. | |
Summon Creature | KAL XEN | BW PU OB BO | Summons a random creature – most often of the undead – to help the mage in battle. | |
Call Destruction | KAL VAS GRAV POR | SC DB VA PI EX | All visible foes are hit with horrible lightning bolts – even underground. | |
Devastation | IN VAS ORT CORP | BW SC DB VA PI EX BM BR | Armageddon-like. | |
Ethereal Travel | ORT GRAV POR | 5 pieces of blackrock | Enables travel to the Ethereal Void, though the presence of the Titans means the spell doesn't work to its full potential. |
Lore[edit]
“ | Thaumaturgy is the term I use to define the collection of spells that I have learned over time. Put quite simply, Thaumaturgy borrows and steals a bit from each of the other magics, choosing the clear path of chaos rather than becoming too well defined and stagnant. Much like Sorcerers, I enchant items with the power of reagents and the mind.
Any Thaumaturge who knows the business may craft spells, scrolls, potions or various other implements of magic. There is almost nothing that I cannot do through the use of this form of magic, as it does not confine itself to a style. In Thaumaturgy, the foci are the actual spell books that contain the formulae and references to the reagents required for the spell. In addition, enchanted, single-use scrolls that require no other components can also be used to cast spells. Most of the spells from the other forms of magic can be distilled to their basics and put into scrolls and books as well — by a Thaumaturge of sufficient skill, that is. – from The Chronicle of Pagan (Ultima VIII)

Trivia[edit]
- It is important to note, that the spells are not available right away. Certain plot flags need to be set, before a spell becomes available. Thus it is important to return to Mythran after any important plot point and see if he's willing to teach the Avatar more spells. If this is not the case, Mythran says the Avatar should return later. Note that the spells still have to be learned in that order, with exception of Ethereal Travel, which overrides every other spell in the list.
- Confusion Blast: available after enabling Devon to become the Tempest
- Meteor Shower: available after the Avatar becomes Scion to the Necromancer
- Summon Creature: available after entering the Shrine of the Ancient Ones for the first time
- Call Destruction: available after talking to Stratos at Argentrock Isle
- Devastation: Available after freeing Hydros from her prison
- Ethereal Travel: available after reading both books about the obelisk (from Malchir and Mythran)
- For some reason "Confusion Blast" spellbook needs to be recharged after each usage, making it strangely poor and useless when tallied against the rest of Thaumaturgy spells which are actually unlimited after their corresponding spellbook has been charged. Though it's true that nor "The Chronicle of Pagan" nor "Pentology" are clear on whether Thaumaturgy spellboks are discharged after each usage it becomes clear that at least one of these behaviours is a bug.
